12th Infantry

Unidentified Soldier

12th Regiment North Carolina State Troops

Shown is an unidentified member of the 12th North Carolina State Troops (2nd NC Volunteers), likely from either Company B or 2nd Company D.

This image came out of a Granville County, North Carolina estate, and both this style of uniform and the photography studio (table/book combination) are frequently seen in other identified 12th North Carolina images.

The 12th North Carolina was organized in May 1861 at a camp of instruction in Garysburg, North Carolina. Of its twelve original companies, two hailed from Granville County – the Granville Greys (organized April 22 at Oxford) and the Townsville Guards (organized April 26 at Townsville).

This soldier appears in a single-breasted, eight button frock coat with black trim, commonly seen in early-War uniforms.
