11th Infantry

Third Lieutenant Elisha Fletcher Walker

Company B, 11th Regiment N.C. Troops

The first company raised in Burke County was the “Burke Rifles,” which served six months in 1861 as Company G of the 1st Regiment N.C. Volunteers. In December 1861 a cadre of about twenty-five veterans of the “Rifles” began organizing a new company, mostly from Burke County, but with contingents also from Caldwell and Wilkes counties, that mustered into service on March 31, 1862, as Company B, 11th Regiment N.C. Troops. One of the new members of the company was Burke County farmer Elisha Fletcher Walker, who enlisted on February 1, 1862.

Walker was report present through April 30th, 1863, when he was granted a twenty-one day furlough. He returned to duty and served until he was severely wounded in side and shoulder at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. Walker was reported absent on wounded furlough in August 1863 but returned to duty and was promoted to corporal on November 1, 1863. In February 1864 Walker was elected third lieutenant in Company B and, “having passed a satisfactory examination” administered by the staff of Kirkland’s Brigade (to which the 11th North Carolina belonged), was commissioned to rank from February 15.

Walker sustained a slight wound at the Battle of Wilderness, May 5, 1864, but apparently remained on duty. The 11th North Carolina participated in a counter attack at the Battle of Burgess’s Mill, October 27, 1864. Losses were severe, including more than one hundred men captured. One of them was Lieutenant Walker. He was imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, from October 31 to December 16, 1864, when he was transferred to Fort Delaware. Walker was released from Fort Delaware on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

Elisha F. Walker (September 21, 1834-October 30, 1902) is buried at Gilboa United Methodist Church Cemetery, US 64 and Hopewell Road, Burke County
